A village shaped by the sea
Øksfjord has a long history as a fishing community. For generations, the sea provided employment, food and a connection to the rest of Norway.
Historically, the village was home to important fish-processing activities, including fish filleting, cold storage and herring oil production. Although the fishing industry has changed over the years, the maritime character of Øksfjord remains an essential part of daily life.
Today, the local economy includes aquaculture, fish-related industries, public services and tourism.
The harbour continues to play an important role, welcoming fishing vessels, recreational boats, ferries and coastal passenger ships.
Visitors can experience the atmosphere of a genuine working coastal village rather than a purpose-built tourist resort.
